America's flashiest luxury doesn't necessarily live in its flashiest cities. A new Mozio analysis of the nation's mid-size cities finds a different luxury economy taking shape from Fort Lauderdale to Salt Lake City, one built on spa retreats, boutique hotels, and private clubs. Only 60 of the 102 cities studied cleared the bar for what Mozio calls the Quiet Luxury Index, and the best places to arrive for a luxury getaway weren't always the destinations you'd expect.
Mozio scored each city's luxury footprint using Yelp business data across six categories, then ranked cities by venue density, category breadth, and average quality. The cities at the top show that travelers don't always have to land in America's biggest destinations to find a trip filled with five-star experiences.

Huntington Beach, CA, ranked No. 1 on the Quiet Luxury Index, with 78 highly rated luxury venues serving about 193,000 residents. Its strong venue ratings and deep selection of spas and wellness destinations helped push it to the top, giving travelers plenty of ways to settle into a luxury getaway soon after arriving. Ranking 5th overall, Bellevue, WA, stood out for fine dining. The city had 0.52 $$$$ restaurants per 10,000 residents, compared with Manhattan's 0.34.The Hamptons (2h 14m from JFK) and Cape Cod (1h 18m from Boston) also rank among the least accessible, because the beach is a long haul from the big-city airport.
Some cities led on sheer density of high-end venues. Others won on quality or range. Huntington Beach had more than 18 times as many luxury venues per 10,000 residents as San Bernardino, which ranked last for luxury venue density. Escondido, CA, led the study on venue quality, averaging 4.73 out of 5 stars across its qualifying luxury venues. Fullerton and Corona, CA, followed closely at 4.68 stars.
The overall ranking rewarded cities with a broad mix of luxury amenities, not just a high concentration of them. Salt Lake City, which ranked No. 8 overall, did not make the top 10 for luxury density. However, it ranked first for category breadth, with at least two venues in 5 of the 6 luxury categories.
The cities in the ranking didn't all offer the same kind of luxury. Some stood out for spas and wellness, while others gave travelers an especially deep selection of upscale places to stay or dine.
Spas and wellness venues made up 46.7% of all qualifying luxury venues in mid-size America, more than 10 times the share held by fine dining at just 4.5%.
Savannah, GA, emerged as America's boutique-stay capital, with 23 highly rated luxury hotels and inns, the most of any city in the study. Savannah and Charleston combined had 45 qualifying luxury lodging options, more than the other 8 top-10 cities combined (44).
High-end retail was the rarest category, accounting for just 0.5% of all qualifying venues and appearing in only 5 of the 60 ranked cities. Fine dining was nearly as scarce citywide, with 29 of the 60 ranked cities showing zero qualifying $$$$ restaurants.
The flip side of this study is where quiet luxury isn't:
The map of American luxury is wider than it looks. Places like Huntington Beach, Savannah, and Bellevue offer the spas, boutique hotels, and fine dining travelers expect from far bigger names, often with smaller crowds and lower profiles. And the luxury of a trip can start before you reach the hotel.
A private transfer waiting at the airport, then a smooth ride to a boutique stay, sets the tone for everything that follows. For travelers deciding where to go next, the Quiet Luxury Index suggests some of the most rewarding trips may begin somewhere you hadn't thought to look.
We analyzed the 102 U.S. incorporated cities ranked 101–202 by population (U.S. Census July 1, 2024 population estimates) to identify the highest-ranking "quiet luxury" destinations among mid-size cities; the 100 largest U.S. cities were excluded to surface under-the-radar destinations. New York City was analyzed separately as a per-capita benchmark and is not ranked.
Using Yelp business data collected in August 2026, we identified each city's luxury venues across six categories: Fine dining (price tier $$$$), luxury lodging (hotels, resorts, and B&Bs), high-end retail ($$$$), fine jewelers and watch dealers, spas and wellness, and private clubs (golf, country, and social clubs, and marinas).
A venue qualified only with a minimum 4.0-star rating and at least 25 reviews. Because Yelp's location search returns businesses in and around a searched city, every venue was geo-verified to the city it is actually located in and deduplicated by Yelp business ID.
Each qualifying city was scored on a weighted composite, scaled 0 to 100:
Luxury venue density (50%): Qualifying luxury venues per 10,000 residents; higher scored more favorably.
Pillar breadth (25%): The number of the six luxury categories with at least two qualifying venues; higher scored more favorably.
Venue quality (25%): The average star rating across the city's qualifying venues; higher scored more favorably.
Cities with fewer than five qualifying venues (42 of 102) were excluded from the rankings. Rankings reflect performance among the cities included in this study, not all U.S. destinations. The Manhattan comparison uses New York City's Yelp-reported total of 288 $$$$ restaurants (0.34 per 10,000 residents).
Limitations: Yelp's search returns up to 240 results per query (the NYC and Santa Clarita $$$$ restaurant searches exceeded this cap); Yelp price tiers are community-reported, which is why the rating and review quality gate was applied; counts reflect active Yelp listings at collection time.
