The Most Stressful Airports in the U.S.: Where Delays and $80 Parking Hit Travelers Hardest

Some trips feel more difficult than they should. Maybe they don't get off to the best start, you pay too much for airport parking, you're delayed getting off the runway, and when you land, the journey into the city feels like it takes longer than the flight itself.

To find the airports where that stressful feeling is most common, Mozio analyzed the 20 busiest airports in the U.S. by passenger traffic.

We then looked at the parts of the journey that often feel like they matter the most:

By combining these factors, we’ve revealed which airports make travel feel straightforward, and which can add stress to your trip. Because when the airport experience runs smoothly, the rest of your trip usually follows.

Make the journey part of the plan

A stressful airport doesn’t have to define your trip.

Booking an airport transfer in advance means no waiting in taxi lines, no navigating unfamiliar routes, and no surprises when it comes to the price. Just a smooth, direct journey from the terminal to your destination.

Book your perfect airport transfer today and skip the lines.

Chicago O’Hare named America’s most stressful airport

From long-haul hubs to busy domestic gateways, these airports stand out for all the wrong reasons. With long delays and expensive parking, these major travel hubs prove that bigger doesn’t always mean smoother.

1. Chicago O'Hare International Airport

Airport stress score: 8.42 out of 10

Chicago O’Hare takes the top spot, with frequent delays, high parking costs, and one of the longest journeys into the city centre among major U.S. airports.

More than a quarter (25.4%) of flights depart outside 15 minutes of their scheduled time, meaning delays are more likely to be part of the experience. Terminal parking costs $43 per day, which can add up quickly over multiple days, and the drive to Chicago Union Station takes about an hour.

That combination makes O’Hare one of the most demanding airports to travel through, especially during peak times, but one way to streamline your journey is to book airport transfers in advance.

2. LaGuardia Airport

Airport stress score: 7.54 out of 10

LaGuardia stands out for one reason in particular: costly parking. At $80 per day, it has the highest daily rate of any airport in the study.

Flights are slightly less reliable than those at O’Hare, with over a quarter (26.3%) departing late, and the journey into Manhattan takes almost an hour, including a 54-minute drive to Times Square.

A smooth arrival at LaGuardia is possible with advance planning, and pre-booked transfers remove much of the uncertainty.

3. John F. Kennedy International Airport & Newark Liberty International Airport

Airport stress score: 7.19 out of 10

JFK handles huge passenger volumes, and while almost 8 in 10 (78.3%) flights depart within 15 minutes of schedule, the overall experience remains stressful. Parking costs $70 per day, and the drive to Times Square takes about 56 minutes, which can be even longer in heavy traffic.

Newark Liberty International is similar to JFK, with parking at $70 per day, though it has slightly lower on-time performance (76.2%) for departing flights. The journey into the city, however, is shorter at 31 minutes to Newark Penn Station.

Minneapolis is named America’s least stressful airport for travelers

Not every airport experience has to be a challenge. At the other end of the rankings, these airports have fewer delays, more manageable parking costs, and shorter journeys into the city.

1. Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport

Airport stress score: 1.76 out of 10

Minneapolis-Saint Paul takes the top spot as the least stressful airport in the U.S., performing well across all factors that impact a smooth experience.

It has one of the highest on-time departure rates in the study, with more than 8 in 10 flights leaving within 15 minutes of schedule (81.5%). Parking is also on the lower end at $30 per day, and the drive into the city takes just 20 minutes to reach the Minnesota State Capitol.

2. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport

Airport stress score: 2.28 out of 10

Phoenix scores well across all three factors, making it one of the most consistent airports in the study.

With nearly 8 in 10 (78.7%) flights leaving within 15 minutes of schedule and moderate parking costs of $33 per day, this airport gives travelers predictability and affordability. Proximity is the main advantage, with Phoenix City Hall just an 11-minute drive away.

3. San Francisco International Airport

Airport stress score: 2.98 out of 10

San Francisco International performs especially well on punctuality, with over 8 in 10 (81.1%) flights departing on time–one of the strongest figures in the study. The drive into the city is also relatively manageable, taking around 18 minutes to reach Union Square.

Parking costs are slightly higher than at some airports, at $39 per day, but the overall experience is still smooth compared to most major hubs.

As air travel often marks the start of a trip, we wanted to understand which airports across the U.S. create the most friction for travelers and which are best set up to make arrivals feel smooth and straightforward.

We analysed data from the 20 busiest airports in the U.S. by passenger traffic, according to the FAA

Each airport was given a normalised score out of 10 based on the following factors:

Flight delay performance

The percentage of flights that departed within 15 minutes of scheduled time at each airport, sourced from TranStats.

Airport parking costs

The standard daily parking cost at each airport, sourced from official airport websites, is the on-site short-stay or terminal parking rate. Where multiple parking options are listed, the most comparable standard daily parking rate was used.

Distance from the airport to the city centre

The driving distance between the airport terminal and a recognised central landmark, such as the main train station, city hall, or central square, was calculated using Google Maps.

The same comparable date and time were used for each airport, taking the quickest route possible if there were multiple options. If the distance was given as an estimated range,  the midpoint was taken.

This data was collected on 19.03.2026. We used the time it takes to get from the airport to the landmark.

Finally, we created a normalised score out of 10 for each factor, and then calculated a combined overall ‘airport stress score’.
